In Her Shoes Dancing in the Shadow of Cancer Joanie Shawhan 9781950051182 Books Reviews

  • This book, In Her Shoes, provides comfort and support for women battling cancer. The author has experience as an oncology nurse and an ovarian cancer patient. In her book, she shares stories of her personal challenges with cancer as well as the stories of other cancer survivors.

Everyday women facing cancer, and their friends and family, are sure to find encouragement and hope as they read the stories of women who have coped and prevailed. I especially appreciated the practical tips for friends and family, the scriptures and prayers, and the hints of humor. It’s evident the author is eager to come alongside those facing the challenge of a cancer diagnosis in order to share kind counsel and hope.
  • I couldn’t wait to read the book, so I ordered from and got it yesterday!! It was fabulous!!! I haven’t sat down and read a book for years, and I couldn’t stop reading this inspiring book!
  • In her Shoes Dancing in the Shadow of Cancer is full of stories of hope. The author, registered nurse Joanie Shawhan, tells her own story of ovarian cancer from discovery through treatment. In an easy-to-read style, she also includes vignettes from multiple other women of going through different varieties of cancer. Humor, prayers, and very helpful tips fill out the pages. Highly recommend!
  • Wow. “In Her Shoes” is bursting with hope, faith and love—not to mention practicality and compassion. This is an important book, written by a woman who has lived through the gamut of fear (after her diagnosis of cancer), physical misery during her treatments, and the incredible support from family, friends and medical team.
Joanie Shawhan doesn’t stop with her own cancer journey. She interviews almost a dozen women about their own cancer stories. She includes helpful hints, not only for those undergoing the trauma on their bodies, souls and minds that cancer inflicts, but those who love them.
I appreciated the doses of humor and hope suffused throughout the book. A diagnosis of cancer is devastating, as Ms. Shawhan knows first hand. But the cancer does not define the woman, and while cancer steals much of what is natural and normal in a woman’s life, it isn’t strong enough to destroy a sense of humor. Or faith, or hope or love.
