P Is for Pterodactyl The Worst Alphabet Book Ever Raj Haldar Chris Carpenter Maria Beddia 0760789274367 Books Reviews

  • Loved the idea. However it uses Ouija boards for "O", with matching illustrations and description. There is no way to have known about this subject matter when I ordered, I was startled to see it in a children's alphabet book. So I wanted to write a review sharing this information for other christian families who avoid such things. I'll be returning the book.
  • The overall idea is hilarious, and I bought three as gifts for my nephews. However, I didn't know it contained "O is for Ouija" before I purchased the book. In my opinion, I don't think that content is appropriate for kids, so I returned all three copies. I would have kept them if that page was on another topic, so if it doesn't bother you, then you'll likely enjoy this book.
  • I've long thought that the poor correlation of the sound of English words to their spelling needed to be highlighted. This humorous book does a great job of lampooning word initial sounds versus word initial letters. It should be a required textbook for all ESL classes!
  • This book is hilarious!! What a great way to make kids feel good about learning! It shows you that language is hard and encourages you to laugh about the hard stuff and not feel bad that it's hard. Teaching kids with humor - who'dha thunk it works?! Buy one for every child and adult on your list. You will officially be the coolest gift giver ever.
  • This book was a hoot to read. Even as a college grad there were new words for me to learn. In the back was a dictionary of the new words, how to say them, and what they meant. Great for adults as a laugh or for children to learn so of the quirks of the English language.
  • Great book! My kids love it 7 and 11. Encourages conversation about the words used in the book. Fantastic illustration. Both kids took the book to school and their teachers loved it! Highly recommend. Planning on giving a few as gifts. Great book for all ages.
  • I worried this would be a great idea badly executed, but they really delivered a good book and put effort into it instead of just phoning it in. It’s worth the money just for the novelty, but it does actually help my 9 year old with silent letters too
  • I was so excited about this book that I pre-ordered it, and had no way of knowing what was inside. I was heartbroken that it mentions a Ouija board in a lighthearted, jovial manner (not like a dictionary which simply tells what it is), while a French man says "oui, oui," to a witch, that he'd love to play the Ouija board with her. Also, the pterodactyl is a psychic - again, no way of knowing this without actually seeing the book. I returned it.

"I defer to no one in my admiration of Enid Blyton and her contribution to children's literature. I have very fond memories of every single book in the Adventure series, (River of Adventure, Island of Adventure, Castle of Adventure, etc.) But, some series hold up better than others.

Secret Seven is the entry level series. Then there are the Five; then, the Adventure series.

The Secret Seven mysteries are very simple. Every few pages a random adult provides critical information. The boys are very patronizing in their treatment of the girls, and the girls appear to accept this condescension as fair and appropriate. Given how many modern entry level mystery series now allow for strong and personable girl characters, this weakness seems especially glaring. There is not much atmosphere, little character development, and not a great deal to capture the imagination. On the other hand, the books aren't all fantasy, magic and dragons, and there is a lot to be said for the old-fashioned neighborhood gang-of-kids mystery.

The upshot is that while I can certainly see the Secret Seven series hooking a young reader as a solid entry-level read.

I have this first volume in my early readers library. I'm waiting to see if any of my grandchildren warm to it before I get any more. (But, all of the Adventure series books are sitting there waiting for the kids to get older.)"

  • 'Puzzle for the Secret Seven' is the tenth in the series of 15 books comprising 'The Secret Seven Series' written by children's story writer Enid Blyton during the period 1949 to 1963.

In book ten, the secret seven witness a house going up in flames. Following up on Shepherd Matt's suggestion, the gang pitch in to help out the homeless family.

Then the scarecrow's clothes go missing and a valuable antique violin is stolen from a shop window. Are these incidents all intertwined? Yup! It's a first class 'puzzle for the Secret Seven' with Jack's sister Susie and her friend Binkie twice as annoying! )

'Puzzle for the Secret Seven' features the original text with cover and inside illustrations by Tony Ross in 2013.

There is a nine page bonus, featuring

    'About the Secret Seven'
The beginning of a short story 'Let's have a club of our own' (continued in 'Secret Seven Fireworks Book 11'
'The Life and Times of Enid Blyton'.
How well do you remember 'Puzzle for the Secret Seven'?

    ABOUT THE SECRET SEVEN
The Secret Seven are led by Peter, his sister Janet, and their friends Jack, Colin, George, Pam and Barbara and of course, their golden retriever, Scamper.
The Secret Seven have a secret password, a badge, and a secret headquarters. The group investigates mysteries by shadowing, interviewing and, looking for clues. Always a fun read as The Secret Seven comes out on top every time!

NOTE If you like reading in chronological order, I would recommend you read this prequel - Secret Seven Short Story Collection before you start the 15 book Secret Seven Series.

The 'Secret Seven' series is a recommended fun read for preteens. Of course, I also share in the excitement as I read these evergreen mystery/adventures with my young family members )

Hope my review and photos were helpful ... Jeffrey A. (Jeff)

  • Many of these books were on the banned list when I was at school... why? Not sure as i do not see anything sinister - it is fiction after all... a little tame compared to Twilight and other fiction fodder now freely available to kids these days
An easy read, enjoyable and a nice little puzzle for the kids to think about
  • Very child-centered book, obviously written by an adult who deeply KNEW and appreciated children and their clubhouse/mystery adventures.
  • The Secret Seven are always up to something....
Robbery, kidnapping, horse thieves something like that.
I gets really exciting and they have Secret meetings
Susie (Jack's sister) are always trying to interfere with them
So join The Secret Seven in one of their adventures📚
  • My daughter wasn t interested in book . I tried everything . Then i remembered that when i was a kid i loved these books. They are well written, fluid, with an actual story that always has a little mystery to solve. My daughter loved the first one so much that i purchased the whole collection.
  • She says she just likes it...
  • I know that the stories are dated, however, I am thrilled that some of the Enid Blyton series are available as E-books on . i have already purchased the entire the Famous Five and the Secret Seven series. i look forward to buying the Mystery series as well as the Barney series. i hope they are released soon.

Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question Why does my foot hurt?

In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world's greatest distance runners and learn their secrets - and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence.

With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime a 50-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder. With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra runners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons.

Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

"Reading this book made me want to weep. Not because it was sad but because finally I could read something that really touched my soul. I am a newbie at running. I have only until quite recently taken up running as one of my more favorite activities. Running the miles helped to give me perspective. Much needed perspective from my failed relationship with the love of my life, from close friends that I have lost because of that failed relationship, then having to feel that I have lost my mind and myself along the way, and dealing with other not so palatable people in my life. It seemed like the only time that I could be free was when I ran. So you have to forgive me when I say that reading about how running brings out the best in humanity and how we connect when we go back to our true selves and truly be kind and compassionate, really really spoke to me. Somehow I always knew that this is the truth and that to read the words saying so made me profoundly happy. Aside from the humanity aspects, the book is beautifully written with good grace, wisdom and humor, not to mention the amount of research and thought that have been poured into this book. Thank you for writing this. I need to reread it again."

  • Great story. I am not a runner but do train for other outdoor activities. I now have a completely different understanding of ultra marathon runners and what it takes to love what you do, to be great at it. There are people out there who truly love what they do while driving their bodies to complete exhaustion to the point of it being almost dangerous to their health. I had no idea what to expect going into this book other than someone telling me "I should read it". It's not a hard read and I really wanted to know what happened next with each character in the book. It moves along nicely and I am impressed with the author's ability to keep you interested. It's not about finishing or beating your best time. It's about loving what you do, while you're doing it.
  • To be honest I never thought that I would ever believe that I could read a book around the topic of running and enjoy it, but this has turned into one of my all time favorite books and changed the way I think about running.
Distance running is the fountain of youth (if done correctly), and this book both inspires you to run and gives you tips on how to run without hurting your body.
  • I am not a runner. I have never been a runner and doubt I ever will be. But if, at 72 years old, I ever decide to become one, it will be because I read this book. This book is fascinating with its descriptions of the running tribes of Mexico, the quirky people the author meets along his journey to better understand ultra running, the discussions of how “better” running equipment hurts runners, and the description of the exciting race that is the conclusion of the book. I didn’t expect to really like the book, but ended up loving it. I have already recommended it to my book club.
  • I am not a runner but that will be changing soon. I could not put this book down once I started. At the age of 60, I am going through a renaissance of sorts. As an avid cyclist in the mid 80’s I would experience a surreal sense of bliss on long training rides and I long for that again. Briefly I dabbled in running then too and had the same experience. Fast forward 30 years and with a renewed interest in optimal health as I age, recent weight loss and lifestyle change is stirring that hunger again for feeling connected. While I will never be an ultra marathon athlete , I will aspire to apply similar discipline along with hard work and inspiration to find joy in my athletic quest as in my daily life. Highly recommend, great storytelling that will interest runner and non runner alike.
  • I have never in my life been interested in being a runner. I struggled with the mile in school, and assumed that any more than that was impossible for me to achieve. I only read this book because my boyfriend and his family all enjoy running and they suggested it as a book that might pique my interest-- they were totally right. After starting this book I started to run regularly and I even got into the habit of reading a chapter right before I hit the trails each day. It really does a great job of filling you with the feeling that humans are meant to run, and that running fills you with a joy that you cannot find elsewhere. I am sad that it is over and make a point to recommend it to anyone I know who might be slightly curious about running, so if you're here, I recommend it to you!
  • Well written, insightful and appealing story that looks inside the human legacy of endurance training and physical achievement. Our ancestry developed and cherished survival skills that we have somehow morphed into a fringe culture and idiosyncratic sport ultrarunning as an X-sport. Better to enhance our physical gifts and reach for the extreme than to reduce our biological skill-set to decrepitude under the influence of reality TV or social media... even if it sounds remote and difficult.
